THE JEKYLL TRAIL |
Wednesday 25th May, 2016 |
An exclusive visit to four quite special Gertrude Jekyll gardens in Surrey.
The talents of Edwardian plantswoman and designer Gertrude Jeykll – or ‘Bumps’ as her young architect friend Edwin Lutyens affectionately called her - are firmly rooted in Surrey.
All in all she had a hand in the making of some 250 gardens, but we trace the trail of four of them - from Vann at Hambledon where her planting notes were left carefully pinned to the garden shed door, to the sandy 16 acres of heathland from which she carved her own 16 acre garden at Munstead Wood, now as Munstead Wood, The Stables, and The Orchard, lovingly tended by three separate owners bringing their own take and style but always staying true to Gertrude’s principles. Light lunch will be in the ancient barn at Vann. |
