Valleys, Views and Vistas

Everywhere you look in THE STOUR VALLEY there are wonderful sweeping vistas and softly rolling hills. For this is Kent and the bubbling heart of hop country. Gardeners here may complain of the terrain, the wind and the soil but they know they have it good. We are visiting four very generously proportioned gardens- strung out along the valley, all close together and all with an intermingled history of ownership but now all with each bearing the stamp of distinctly individual character. Their old English names sum up the area: Godmersham, Chilham Castle, Bilting and Downs Court. Lunch will be at the Woolpack Inn, which is probably one of the prettier little village squares in Chilham and which is spotted in many a period screen or TV drama from Emma to Miss Marple!
